Jordan is one of the most rewarding travel destinations I know — and still, in my view, significantly underrated. The people are extraordinarily welcoming, the food is remarkable, the history spans every major civilisation, and the landscapes are spectacular.
Petra is the centrepiece: the rose-red city carved from rock by the Nabataeans two millennia ago. Walking the Siq at dawn, as the light reaches the Treasury for the first time, is one of the great experiences of the ancient world. Petra By Night — the candlelit walk to the Treasury — is equally extraordinary.
Wadi Rum adds an entirely different dimension: a desert landscape of sandstone arches and red-sand valleys that Lawrence of Arabia crossed a century ago and where The Martian was filmed. An overnight in a luxury desert camp, stargazing in total silence, is the perfect counterpoint to the archaeology.
